הסבר: "Had been studying" הוא בעבר מתמשך, מכיוון שהוא מתאר את התמשכות הפעולה בעבר. "Realized" ו- "had left" שניהם בעבר מושלם בכדי להמחיש את השתלשלות האירועים.
